Proposals for the refurbishment of Inkerman House in Birmingham gain planning approval.

Inkerman House is a 12 storey, residential tower block located above Newtown Shopping Centre, in Birmingham. Plans for the block were approved in 1966 and it was completed in 1968. It is 44 metres tall, and contains 144 flats, with 12 flats per floor.

The refurbishment of the block forms part of the regeneration programme by Birmingham City Council, to upgrade the facades, fire safety strategies, and thermal performance of existing towers, in the City.

Our key priorities with the proposals are to create a safer and more comfortable living environment for the residents. During the public consultation, the outcome and feedback from residents were extremely positive. Residents will benefit from the building being thermally upgraded, the new heating and ventilation systems within the flats, and greater use of their amenity space, due to the new enclosed balcony system. The updated entrance will improve legibility, enhance security, and encourage residents to take ownership of their block.
